Leaf K/Na ratio predicts salt induced yield loss in irrigated rice

A field trial with 21 irrigated rice varieties for 7 seasons

At the West Africa Rice Development Association, St. Louis, Senegal

fresh water control and salinity at 3.5 mS cm-1 in neighboring plots

Na and K was determined in the 3 youngest fully developed leaves in the early vegetative stage. Yield was determined at maturity.

The ratio between K and Na across the 3 youngest leaves allowed predicting the yield loss due to salinity across genotypes and seasons.
